The IFLA UNIMARC Core Activity succeeds the now
discontinued UBCIM Core Activity in the part related
to International MARC. It was settled by an agreement
signed between IFLA and Biblioteca Nacional (the
National Library of Portugal) in March 2003 (reorganized
in December 2003), which is to last until 2005.
According to IFLA Regulations, the UNIMARC Core
Activity has to provide an annual report, a financial
report and a strategic plan.Its mission is the
maintenance, promotion and development of UNIMARC,
in its diverse formats for Bibliographic, Authorities,
Classification and Holdings data.
IFLA UNIMARC is closely connected to other IFLA
professional groups, namely Division IV - Bibliographic
Control, Working Groups like FRBR and FRANAR and
alliances such as ICABS - IFLA CDNL Alliance for
Bibliographic Standards.
The IFLA UNIMARC Core Activity has its office
at Biblioteca Nacional (the National Library of

As any other IFLA's Core Activity, UNIMARC has
an Advisory Board whose task is "to act in
an advisory capacity to determine priorities and
act as an advocate for its core activity to solicit
financial and other support as necessary".
