The Permanent UNIMARC Committee (PUC) was formed
in 1991, under the IFLA UBCIM Programme and in
accordance with Resolution Nº 5 issued at
the end of the Seminar on Bibliographic Records
held in Stockholm before IFLA General Conference,
August 1990.
It is formed by a minimum of 7 and no more than
9 members, who are experts in UNIMARC and come
from different countries and institutions. As
of March 2004 the composition is as follows:

The main objective of the PUC is to develop the
UNIMARC format in accordance with the principles
of Universal Bibliographic Control, thus
advising in matters concerning UNIMARC promotion,
training, research, testing and priorities and
strategies for developments
maintaining the UNIMARC format by discussing
proposals and officially approving changes to
the format
reviewing the further development of the UNIMARC
format to encompass new functions and new forms
of materials and officially approving the results
acting as a review committee for UNIMARC documentation
published by IFLA.
The Permanent UNIMARC Committee meets once a
year at the UNIMARC Core Activity venue, in Lisbon,
Portugal. PUC acts as an advisory committee to
the Core Activity who ensures and promotes liaison
to other IFLA groups especially Division IV -
Bibliographic Control and ICABS - IFLA/CDNL Alliance
for Bibliographic Standards.
